the lost brigade: episode 26 (the national special)

‘trouble will find me’ is out today and to celebrate, your host has spent hours and hours crying in a badly lit room trying to decide which 13 songs to play for an hour’s podcast special on her joint favourite band in the world. the playlist was never going to be perfect, but the fun part of this episode is that it’s a personal look at some of lilhan’s favourite the national songs, a lot of gushing and a whole bunch of different versions of songs you may or may not know and love. if you’re new to the national and don’t know much of their wonders, we hope that this is a good introduction/education. if you’re a hardcore fan, we hope this is fun to hear. there are no apologies for lilhan’s gushing and fangirling.

we should say at this point that the session versions are mostly available online, the live tracks can be found on youtube or on various eps and bonus material compilations. however, we STRONGLY SUGGEST that you spend your money on this band. they’ve not released a bad record and we know that ‘trouble will find me’ is going to be the album of 2013 because that’s how good this band is. we hope you’ll go out and buy everything they ever released and give it your time and energy. one cannot love this band without devoting some time to their music. if you’re willing, it’ll repay you over and over again.

the band is also going on tour. to find out where they’ll be, head over to the website. you should also buy a t-shirt because their shirts are great.

as usual, if you’d like to get in touch, please do! we love hearing from you all. head over to the contact page for more info. you can also, if you’re a tumblr user, fill in the TELL ME THINGS box. all correspondence is read and appreciated.

for now, we hope you’ll go and buy ‘trouble will find me’ and fall in love with this band. as you’ll hear over the hour in this episode, we fell for them a long time ago and ‘trouble will find me’ is simply the next chapter of our love affair.

have a great week!

the lost brigade: episode 25 (spring is coming!)

it’s finally here and we’re back to our old tricks! spring has put in appearance in 2013 and the lost brigade thought it was a good time to create a new episode after such a long hiatus. this week, lilhan gets spring in her step and puts together a playlist full of songs that sound like the new season. there’s old and new, fast and slow and a bunch of tunes we hope you’ll love and get excited about hearing (whether for the first time or again after a little while).

as usual, we’re asking for your involvement in creating the podcast and we’d like you to submit your theme suggestions, record recommendations or reviews. all the details of where to send them are over at the contact page, or you can fill in our TELL ME THINGS box for free.

we hope you like this episode and you’re all enjoying some spring-ness.

take care of yourselves,

- tlbpodcast xo

p.s. it’s good to be back!

hi everyone!

sincere apologies for the lack of action over the past couple of months. it got a bit hectic for a while and podcasting had to stop for a bit as the real life stuff got in the way of playlist making. however, the good news is that the lost brigade will be returning this week with a new episode and we’ve got plans for new episodes every few weeks. this week’s will be a little podcast to get you in the mood for spring. in the coming weeks, the brigade hopes to bring you some new tunes, some live reviews and maybe even a little special podcast (but we’ve got some issues to iron out with that one, so we’ll keep you posted). as usual, we’d lovelovelove your theme/song/album/band suggestions and you can get in touch through various ways, all of which can be found here or over at the TELL ME THINGS box.

we hope that you’re all doing well.

more soon,

the lost brigade: episode 24

to make up for last week’s lack of podcast, lilhan has made sure that this week’s episode is full of new music for you all. there’s the revival of the old ‘then and now’ feature from the radio days (starring the lovely local natives lads) and there’s folk music from beautiful people including anaïs mitchell & jefferson hamer and this is the kit. we’ve got clapping, bum wigglers and new tunes from i am kloot and foals.

as ever, hit up the contact page if you’ve got something to share with us. we love to hear from you and get some idea of what you’ve been falling for and enjoying in the music world lately. we’re also looking for theme suggestions (2013 is a long year and we’ve only got so much brain power).

see you next week, we hope! take care!

the lost brigade: episode 23 (the anti-valentines)

so, it’s valentine’s day tomorrow and those of us that don’t particularly enjoy your stereotypical romance, public displays of affection or soppy things need an antidote. the lost brigade started these podcasts in 2011 and it’s been so much fun that we’ve compiled another twisted playlist for love-fest 2013. we’re not against romance, per se, but we think that the best love songs are often the angry, bitter, resentful, heartbroken and depressing ones and this episode is full of them.

this podcast is all about the shouty, the sad and ALL THOSE FEELINGS side of love. it’s full of songs that will make you laugh, make you cry and everything in between. the rules are simple: anything that would be inappropriate to put on a mixtape for the person you’ve got your eye on goes in the podcast. there’s filth and fury and we’re warning you now: EXPLICIT CONTENT. sometimes this sort of playlist is the most fun because it’s so silly. there’s tunes from the likes of jarvis cocker, liz phair and the wonderful ryan adams and we can’t promise that their songs won’t break your heart or offend your ears. these are true warriors in the fight against their romantic enemy.

in short: do not press play if you’re sensitive in nature, we don’t want to hurt your feelings or offend you in any way.

we’ve really enjoyed making this episode and we hope that it shows. enjoy shouting along to some of the angrier tunes and have a dance to some of the dirtier ones. as ever, if you’d like to get in touch, please do. you can find details of how HERE.

have a good week and enjoy hating valentine’s day for us. feel free to post a mix of your own and tweet it to us - we’d love to hear your take on the theme!

take care!

the lost brigade: episode 22 (make a nest…)

as the title of this podcast episode suggests, this is a winter playlist for all those horrid dark nights, the cold mornings and the times when it really does feel like no matter which direction you walk, the wind is blowing hail, rain or snow stuff in your face. it’s a playlist for when you just want to lie in bed with a blanket, a book and a warm drink. it’s for the days when the alarm goes off and you can see the ice glinting before you even set foot outside. it’s for walking in the snow, heating up after a freezing cold day, drying off after getting soaked to the skin.

there’s a lot of chilled out acoustic music from the likes of this is the kit, jesca hoop and the wonderful peter broderick. there’s drama from arcade fire and feist and there’s pretty little numbers that’ll warm your cockles just when you feel as if frostbite has set in.

so make yourself a cuppa, wrap yourself in a blanket and chill out to episode 22 from the lost brigade. we promise that’ll it make you feel a bit better about living in what feels like siberia when the wind blows and nearly takes your head off.

as always, we encourage you to get in touch and get involved. we’re looking for new music, new bands, new theme suggestions for our episodes and anything else you might want to share with us. if you’d like to tell us what your personal favourite winter tunes are, then please do! we’ll make another episode if we get enough suggestions to fill an hour. the details of how to contact us are over here.

next week it’s anti-valentine’s! expect bitterness, heartbreak, filth and inappropriate ‘love’ songs. there will be no romance and we’ve had way too much fun compiling a playlist for you guys.

until then, take care and stay toasty!

the lost brigade: episode 21 (first of 2013)

so festivus has come and gone and we hope that you’re settling into 2013 nicely without too much bother and going back to work or school hasn’t been too horrible. we’re hoping that this year will be kind to everyone so we thought we’d start off this year’s the lost brigade podcasts with a bunch o’ good tunes compiled for your ears without restraint of themes. there’s slow, there’s fast, there are life manifestos, there’s sparkle and there’s a little bit of chilled out vibe going around. we’ve music from the likes of the hold steady, joshua james and DAVID BOWIE and we hope that you’ll enjoy this first episode of the year. we find it quite funny that the titles of the songs in this week’s podcast create a sort of resolutions list/plan in their own right. everything from queens to apples! we think this possibly means something, but we haven’t worked out what…

as ever, if you’d like to get in touch, please do! we love hearing from you and your suggestions for records or gigs or bands or anything music related are embraced. we’re also looking for a whole bunch of theme suggestions for 2013. get your thinking caps on and contact us through the various means. it’ll make us (and you!) happy. we never turn down a challenge in our TELL ME THINGS box either.

next week: we think we’re going to make a snowy walks podcast because, as i type, it’s snowing again and it looks like it’s gonna be one helluva week trying to get to work!

‘til then, take care and thanks for supporting the lost brigade!

the lost brigade: episode 20 (albums of 2012)

happy new year from the lost brigade! we hope you’re not too hungover today, but that you had a wonderful evening. to ease yourself into our new year, here is the albums of the year podcast - as promised last week. it’s been tough to keep this episode down to just the one hour (so many songs from so many albums that we wanted to share with you and talk about!), but we think we’ve done okay. there’s music from the likes of perfume genius (beautiful, heartbreaking, swoon worthy), the mountain goats (happy, inspiring, heartwarming) and cat power (dat guitar sound! dat voice!). we hope you hear something new or something that you’d like to invest in. you can’t really go wrong with any of the records mentioned here.

as ever, if you’d like to get in touch, we’d love to hear from you. it’s a new year so the lost brigade will need new theme suggestions, new things to discuss, new music to get our ears around. you can get at us through a number of ways, all of which are to be found on our contact page. you can also fill in the ask box, if you’d prefer.

welcome to 2013; we hope this year is good to you!

the lost brigade: episode 19 (end of 2012 - the songs, pt. 2)

firstly: HAPPY FESTIVUS FROM THE LOST BRIGADE! we hope you had a lovely day and you’re now lying in a splendid heap, full of food and drink.

it’s been quite a year and the final part of this year’s songs of year podcast just proves it. it has been tough to keep this list to just the two hours of music, but getting harsh on the list, a little help from the brigade’s itunes play counter and not including too many tracks from our albums of the year has meant we just about managed it. this week, it’s all about finishing off what last week started and there’s music from the likes of swedish lovelies the tallest man on earth and first aid kit, the ever-so-lovely jesca hoop and the handsome and talented andre bird.

next week it’s all about the albums of 2012 and we’ll be uploading the show on new year’s day. it’ll be something nice for you to listen to while you recover from your fun times. as ever, you can get in touch via a number of ways - the details of which are on our contact page.

enjoy the rest of your holiday season!

the lost brigade: episode 18 (end of 2012 - the songs, pt. 1)

in this week’s episode, we get misty-eyed about the wonderful tunes that have been released this year. it’s been tough to whittle it all down, so we’re doing it over two hours. we’re also currently trying to compile an album’s list (which is hard to say the least). this first hour is just a few of the tunes we’ve played to death over the past twelve months. there’s music from the likes of the gaslight anthem, craig finn and our lovely logo designer, chris stringer (which we suggest you check out AT ONCE).

this year has been tough life-wise, but the music has been incredible. some of these tunes are going to stay with us for a very, very long time because they’ve been so special in 2012. this is just part one of our survival package for this year - the lost brigade couldn’t have managed without these songs, albums and musicians and we extend enormous hugs to each featured. thanks!

next week, more songs of the year. then we get into albums, we hope. you can still send your own end of year lists to the email money at tlbpodcast@gmail.com or tweet us your very favourites. if you don’t want to leave this page, then hit up the TELL ME THINGS box; we’d love to know what your soundtrack to this year was like. sharing is caring.

in the meantime, listen to chris stringer’s ep, eat too much and enjoy the holidays whatever you believe in and we’ll see you on the other side of the merriment.

take care!
